ADHD Child uses delta-E instead of Ritalin!

Have you ever seen a child with ADD or ADHD in extreme frustration and anxiety, unable to focus or concentrate, unable to sit still, having issues relating with their friends or family?

My son was one of these children. At 2 years old, I couldn't sit him down to eat. I used to have to chase him around the living room with a spoon full of food. What a crazy experience. He was diagnosed at 4 years old and we tried everything to help him. First we changed his diet from dairy and carbohydrate based to a more grounding whole grain, legume (beans), vegetables and occasional dairy and saw a world of difference. We also reduced his processed sugar intake and focused on whole fruits and sweet vegetables like butternut squash and carrots. Yes, we even tried Ritalin out of desperation. Eating a tomato as a daily snack???



Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; 
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.


First thing to know about tomatoes they are a fruit not a vegetable. (Just in case you did not know yet)

Tomatoes are packed with a variety of nutrients but the one that stands out the most for tomatoes and provides their color is Lycopene.

Lycopene is found in a number of other red fruits and vegetables; such as red carrots, red bell peppers, watermelons, gac, and papayas (but not strawberries or cherries). 

Studies have shown people that consume tomatoes regularly have a lower risk of certain types of cancers and diseases. (The Mayo Clinic and American Cancer Society say that more studies need to be done) Studies have been mixed once someone does have certain cancers but in general found good effects. Most of the studies show that it can be a good preventative.

Antioxidant :
Research has shown that like other carotenoids, it has many antioxidant properties including Vitamin C. That your body uses to fight off free radicals.


Asthma caused by exercise :
Studies have suggested that antioxidants can be used as a preventative of asthma that is caused by exercise.

Atherosclerosis (coronary artery disease) :
Due to the antioxidant properties Lycopene can be helpful for people with atherosclerosis or high cholesterol.

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) :
People diagnosed with BPH or enlarged prostate are at increased risk of developing prostate cancer and can benefit from adding Lycopene rich foods to their diet and/or taking a Lycopene supplement. Studies suggest that Lycopene can help prevent disease progression in BPH.

Breast cancer prevention :
Studies in animals and humans show that consumption of tomatoes or good Lycopene levels in the body are a good preventative.

Cancer prevention (general) :
Studies have examined large populations to identify the lifestyle factors that affect health. Many of these studies suggest a link between diets high in fruits and vegetables and a decreased risk of developing cancer.

Cervical cancer prevention :
Observations suggest that consumption of tomatoes and/or tomato products can prevent cervical cancer.

Eye disorders (age-related macular degeneration prevention, cataracts) :
The antioxidant properties have been found to be a good preventative therapy for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Some studies have shown peoples eye sight getting better.

Gastrointestinal tract and colorectal cancer prevention :
People that consume tomatoes and/or tomato based products helps prevent digestive tract cancers, including oral, pharyngeal, esophageal, gastric, colon, and rectal.

Gingivitis :
Some evidence that lycopene, may be an effective treatment for gingivitis.

High blood pressure :
Short-term studies have shown Lycopene to lower blood pressure.

High blood pressure associated with pregnancy (pre-eclampsia) :
Lycopene may reduce the development of pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth retardation in women having their first child.

Infertility :
Recent research has suggested that lycopene can boost sperm concentrations in infertile men. In one study, a lycopene-supplemented diet resulted in a statistically significant improvement in sperm concentration and motility amongst the 30 infertile men being studied with six pregnancies following as a result of the trial.

Lung cancer prevention :
People that regularly eat tomatoes had a lower risk of developing lung cancer.

Ovarian cancer (prevention) :
Lycopene intake seems to lower the risk of ovarian cancer.

Prostate cancer :
Studies of large populations report eating tomatoes/tomato-based products reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer. There is some evidence that lycopene may slow the progression of prostate cancer.

Sun protection :
Lycopene in combination with other carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, selenium, and proanthocyanidins, may help in reducing sunburn.

Tomatoes are a good source of Lycopene, that is an excellent preventative to harmful sun UV rays, cancers and inflammation. After reading this you may find yourself eating more tomatoes possibly multiple times a day.

Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this 'World's Biggest Food Fight' where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

How to Start Eating Healthy


How do I start eating healthy?


I was asked a question the other day while I was speaking in front of a networking group called Successful Thinkers. I shared with the group how important it is to take care of your health for your business. Without your health, what else are you going to do with your life? Imagine your health failed you tomorrow and you became bedridden. You would not continue to do your business; you would be finding a way to get out of bed. Why let your health get to that point? Start taking care of yourself NOW!

          The answer is in the question. ‘How do I start eating healthy?’ For him, he wanted to start eating more raw meals. I recommended the best way to start is to start your day raw. I told him what I do most mornings, since I eat 60-80% raw every day. I use ½-cup steel cut oats and ½-cup rolled oats and soak them for 24 hours minimum. Depending on how active you are or how much you eat. That would last me two-three days and I would continue to soak the oats as long as I still had some left over. With the drained soaked oats, I would put them in a bowl and mix them with cinnamon and agave syrup (low glycemic sweetener), then I would add blueberries (or any kind of berry for the antioxidants) and/or a banana, with ground up flaxseeds for the omega’s and if you like your oats moist, add some almond milk. It is a very balanced raw breakfast, which is also very affordable when you purchase the oats, cinnamon and flaxseeds from the bulk section. If you have a Whole Foods near you, I really like their bulk section and yes, they have bulk spices.

          Once you start your day on the right step to eating healthy, you will want to continue to have the great energy that you just received from your raw oats. I asked him to try this breakfast for three days in a row and to let me know how he felt afterwards.

The Life You Save May Be Your Own!

One of my goals in life is to thrive – and to help others to do the same. Thriving is as far above surviving as sky is above ocean. Part of my formula for thriving involves preventive wellness. Remember the old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? During my childhood I observed my parents operate from that axiom. I can recall my father cautioning always keep the gas tank filled - it may save you from being stranded, or stay out of dark alleys – it may save you from getting mugged. And my mother advising wash your hands after you use the toilet, or keep your fingers out of your mouth, or an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
As a healthcare professional I have watched cancer rates soar, pathogenic organisms proliferate, antibiotic resistance emerge, auto-immune diseases multiply, and medical costs skyrocket. Frequently I see patients racked by disease and disability that could have been avoided through designed prevention. Their family systems become stressed through care giving and/or friends and family are left behind to grieve for what might have been.
Prevention is a key factor in the preservation of health and vitality. Another key contributor to longevity and wellness is the strength of our body's immune system. It was designed not only to help us to avoid illness but also to heal us when we succumb. Studies suggest that up to 85% of illness may be within reach of the body’s immune system – if it is functioning effectively.

“Dis-ease” and the Immune System

I perceive illness as a dis-ease of the immune system and it can leave behind a staggering wake of human suffering. Here are just a few examples of dis-ease associated with immune system dysfunction:
  • AIDS - acquired immune deficiency syndrome
    Auto-immune diseases - rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Cancer - the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States. It strikes three of four families annually, kills more children ages 13 to 14 than any other cause, and is responsible for one in every five deaths (500,000 per year). Estimates are that 68% of all cancer is preventable.
  • CFIDS - chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (reported to be the second largest epidemic in the United States behind AIDS).
  • Influenza – on average the flu affects 1 in 5 Americans annually and is the 6th leading cause of death.
  • Allergies – to foods, pollens, animals, chemicals, you name it!
